PhD in Early Mammalian Development

Posted by , on 23 February 2026

Location: Seville

Closing Date: 13 March 2026

The Cell Potency Transitions (Spruce) group, is opening a 3 year fully funded PhD position at the Andalusian Centre for Developmental Biology (CABD, Seville).

The position

In mammals the embryonic genome begins in a transcriptionally inactive state and its awakening, a process known as zygotic genome activation, is linked to the emergence of totipotency, the ability to form all the lineages of the embryo. We have recently received funding to investigate novel YAP1 interactions in zygotic genome activation and the emergence of totipotency and this will be the focus of the PhD position. The selected candidate will use both whole embryo and stem cell models and gain experience of an array of modern molecular biology techniques including CRISPR mediated genome editing, high throughput sequencing and high resolution imaging.

The place

The Andalusian Centre for Developmental Biology (CABD) is situated in the beautiful and vibrant city of Seville.  In the institute groups take a collaborative, creative, multispecies and interdisciplinary approach to the study of developmental biology making it an outstanding place for those interested in this topic to pursue a PhD. Students will be enrolled on the Biotechnology doctoral program from the University Pablo de Olavide and will be given the opportunity to take part in the universities part time Bioinformatics master’s course.
