AREA OF EXPERTISE: germ cell development and human infertility. ACTIVITIES: Paulo Navarro-Costa is a starting group leader at the Lisbon Medical School (Portugal). His work is at the interface between basic and clinical reproductive research. First or last author in a total of 14 peer-reviewed papers on gametogenesis and reproductive genetics, and corresponding author in 9 of them. Cited more than 600 times (data: Google Scholar). Paulo is also a Clinical Geneticist at the European Molecular Genetics Quality Network (UK), member of the Editorial Board of the official journal of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (USA), and Invited Assistant Professor at the Lisbon Medical School (Portugal). RESEARCH: His recent work has uncovered an ancient transcriptional program in metazoan male germ cells (bioRxiv, 2022), a new model for transcript sharing in mammalian spermatogenesis (PLOS Biology, 2020), a transcriptional program required for the unpacking of sperm chromosomes after fertilization (EMBO reports, 2018) and a new epigenetic mechanism that temporally controls meiotic transcription (Nature Communications, 2016). COMMUNICATION: Paulo is an active scientific communicator, with experience in engaging specialized audiences and the public, and was one of the first scientists asked by the Company of Biologists to publicly comment on the CRISPR-babies controversy in 2018.
