Apoptosis and Cancer
(conference) Organizer:
Gerald Cohen (University of Leicester, UK)

Description:
A failure of cells to undergo apoptosis is a common feature of many cancers. During the last 20 years, work in many laboratories has led to the identification and understanding of many of the key players involved in apoptosis. This conference will highlight recent developments in our current understanding of the cellular role of some of these proteins as well as how our knowledge of the basic cellular apoptotic pathways is being used to develop targeted cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Particular attention will be paid to novel agents that are currently in development or early clinical trials to exploit our understanding of the Bcl-2 family, the p53 family, death receptors and inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs). Discussion sessions will involve members from academia as well as industry.

RIKEN Brain Summer School 2012
(course) The RIKEN Brain Science Institute (RIKEN BSI), located just outside Tokyo, Japan, offers a summer program to train advanced students interested in brain function. Applicants may choose either a two-month laboratory internship (Plan A) within a RIKEN BSI laboratory, or an intensive 7-day lecture course (Plan B) featuring a distinguished international faculty. Those participating in the internship may also enroll in the lecture course.

Typically, around 45 international students are accepted to the Summer Program each year. Attendees have wide-ranging academic backgrounds and are usually enrolled in graduate courses, or have recently embarked on postdoctoral research. However, candidates holding other positions are encouraged to apply.

Attendees usually reside on/near the RIKEN campus, where they have ample opportunity to interact with invited lecturers, other attendees and RIKEN BSI researchers. Students unable to provide their own financial support will be considered for travel and accommodation bursaries provided by RIKEN BSI.

Stem Cells in Cancer - 2nd Annual Cambridge Stem Cell International Symposium
(conference)

The symposium aims to critical evaluate novel findings and models of how stem cells contribute to cancer and will cover the following themes: (1) Cells at the origin of cancer, (2) Stem cells and metastasis, (3) Cancer stem cell niches, and (4) Approaches to identify cancer stem cells.

The programme includes world-class experts in the field of stem cells and cancer from Europe and the United States. To give new junior investigators as well as postdocs and PhD students the opportunity to discuss their work with established scientists, every session will have at least one selected speaker from the submitted posters.

To maximize cross-disciplinary interactions and networking and to critically evaluate recent developments in this very competitive and rapidly growing field of research, the program includes an extended poster session.

Mathematical Modelling for Biologists 10-13 Sept
(course) 5th CPIB Summer School: Mathematical Modelling for Biologists

10-13 September 2012, University of Nottingham, UK

The aims of our summer school are:

* To introduce modelling and quantitative approaches to biologists

* To explain where models come from, and how to investigate the behaviour of those models

* To introduce differential equation models, parameter estimation and sensitivity, randomness and spatial models

* To show how to create, simulate and analyse models using appropriate software

Examples will include applications to gene regulation, biochemical reactions, population dynamics, and epidemiology.

Target audience: Open to all - PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with a biological background are particularly encouraged to attend, and no prior experience is assumed. We welcome applications from biologists from all sub-disciplines - you don't have to be a plant scientist to attend!

Places are limited to 40 and applicants are asked to give their background and motivation for attending. Priority will be given to applicants who we think will benefit most from the course. We will review applications in the order that they come in, until all 40 places are full.

Thanks to support from CPIB and the Company of Biologists, the course fee for 2012 is only £100 and this covers tuition, single en-suite accommodation for 3 nights, and all meals and refreshments.

Programme:

Day 1: Data, Networks and Models

Day 2: Multi-variable models

Day 3: Parameter estimation and sensitivity; Stochastic models Day 4: Multicellular modelling

The course comprises integrated lectures and computer-based practicals which will allow you to gain an understanding of modelling approaches in a helpful, friendly environment.

Course Organisers: Nick Monk (University of Sheffield) and Markus Owen (University of Nottingham).
