Fully funded PhD studentship: You are what you eat – mining macrophage diversity to enhance phagocytosis (deadline 7th Jan 2024)
Posted by Iwan Evans, on 22 December 2023
Location: University of Sheffield
Closing Date: 7 January 2024
This is a fully funded PhD position to study in vivo macrophage biology using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and is part of the White Rose BBSRC DTP.
The Evans and King labs at the University of Sheffield are proud of our welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environments and you would be working alongside experts in the actin/microtubule cytoskeletons, phagocytosis, immunology and imaging. We have an excellent record supporting our PGRs both in terms of their publications and subsequent career destinations.
You would be doing lots of live imaging in our state-of-the-art imaging facility to understand regulation of phagocytosis using embryonic macrophages (magenta) such as can be seen engulfing dying cells (green) in the Drosophila embryo below (a GIF of a movie made by our previous PhD student, Olivier Tardy):
We particularly welcome applications from students with an interest in developmental biology, cell biology, the cytoskeleton and immunology. This position is open to UK and overseas students. Please see the link below to find out more and do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss this project ahead of application (i.r.evans@sheffield.ac.uk). The deadline for applications is 7th Jan 2024.
