Generative AI: Applications in Science & Academia

Posted by , on 6 March 2025

Join us for 12 hours of engaging hands-on learning to effectively apply generative AI tools to your research, from fundamentals through advanced techniques.

  • April 7: Workshop A: Fundamentals of Generative AI—one 3-hour session
    • We’ll start with a one 3-hour session designed for complete beginners, providing a comprehensive introduction to ChatGPT and similar tools. It clarifies their capabilities and limitations, establishing the foundational knowledge necessary for informed and effective usage. The knowledge gained equips participants to confidently apply prompt engineering techniques to their individual research projects, ensuring they build a strong foundation for future learning.
  • April 14, 16, and 17: Workshop B: Advanced Generative AI Concepts and Application—three 90-minute sessions
    • In three 90-minute sessions, we’ll build on the foundational concepts established in Workshop A to explore how LLMs can facilitate grant writing and research discovery. These sessions will explore advanced topics such as Chain of Thought prompting, including practical guidance on when and when not to use it. We’ll introduce more sophisticated prompt engineering techniques to expand participants’ capabilities and deepen their understanding. To further refine and expand participants” skills, Workshop B introduces AI Studio, developed by Google. This platform provides access to state-of-the-art large language models from Google DeepMind and access to the latest vision tools.
  • April 21, 23, and 24: Workshop C: Special Topics: Generative AI Tools and Applications for Preparing Manuscripts and Scientific Communications—three 90-minute sessions
    • We’ll wrap up with three more 90-minute sessions that build directly on the foundations of Workshops A and B, focusing on equipping participants with advanced skills to confidently and efficiently apply prompt engineering techniques and AI tools to address complex, real-world challenges. These sessions focus on developing and evaluating scientific content, including using LLMs in manuscript preparation. Learn how to accurately extract data from research articles, advantages and disadvantages of using LLMs to write and edit content, how to reduce “hallucinations” by providing “ground-truth,” and much more.

All workshops begin at 2 p.m. US Central Time (19:00 UTC). Space is limited—don’t miss out on this unique opportunity!

Register for the full series to get the most out of this unique opportunity!

Although each workshop is designed to stand alone, skipping foundational content significantly limits the opportunity for meaningful growth and awareness around the myriad of pitfalls relating to using large language models. Sequential progression ensures participants can fully leverage the techniques and tools introduced in later sessions. Like programming languages, LLMs have unique requirements and nuances that need to be understood to effectively deploy them for personal projects. This progression ensures participants gain the knowledge and confidence needed to unlock these tools’ full capabilities.
