Postdoc position available at the Institute of Translational Stem Cell Research (ITS)

Posted by , on 26 May 2021

Location: Munich, Germany

Closing Date: 1 September 2021

At our institute, you will find a scientifically stimulating international environment. Together with renowned scientists and supported by an excellent infrastructure you will have the opportunity to make an important contribution to a healthier society.

The Institute of Translational Stem Cell Research (ITS), headed by Prof. Henrik Semb, focuses on developing stem-cell-based therapies to treat patients with Type 1 Diabetes. ITS is looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral candidate with a strong background in stem cell biology to generate a human stem cell-based therapy for type 1 diabetes as part of a collaborative H2020 project, the ISLET. The goal of the ISLET project is to pioneer a new advanced cell therapy to treat T1D patients. To accomplish this, ISLET gathers a team of internationally leading experts to establish a GMP-compliant manufacturing program based on improved and standardized protocols for the generation and characterization of future stem-based based therapies.

The candidate is expected to establish a highly efficient and robust GMP-compliant manufacturing protocol for a human pluripotent stem-cell-derived beta-cell product with functional properties comparable to human islets. The GMP-compliant protocol will involve translating basic research discoveries in islet fate decisions from Prof. Semb´s lab at DanStem, University of Copenhagen.

Specifically, the candidate will participate in the generation of cell banks using a GMP-grade hESC line and a quality control strategy for the stem cell-derived beta product. Also, the candidate will produce stem-cell-derived beta cells under Good manufacturing practices (GMP) conditions in collaboration with the academic GMP-facility TUMCells. The candidate will work closely with a team of scientists at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center, an interdisciplinary and translational research centre dedicated to diabetes research, with TUMCells and with the partners of the ISLET project.
