Postdoctoral Fellowship – Cardiovascular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas)

Posted by , on 20 February 2022

Job type: Postdoc

Location: Houston, Texas

Closing Date: 30 April 2022

The Wythe Lab at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas has an open position for a postdoctoral associate to manage research projects, train junior scientists, and help maintain a dynamic laboratory environment. We employ gold standard genetic models, such as the mouse and zebrafish, cutting edge imaging techniques (lightsheet micro-CT), genome-wide informatic analyses (both bulk RNA-seq and scRNA-seq, as well as ATAC-seq, etc), and classical biochemistry to solve key problems in cardiovascular development and disease.

Current projects are focused on vascular biology in malignant brain cancer (glioma), vascular anomalies within the brain (specifically brain arteriovenous malformations), and modeling human congenital birth defects affecting the cardiovascular system in mice and zebrafish, as well as determining the epigenetic and transcriptional drivers controlling vessel maturation within the embryo and brain.

In this exciting role, you are an intrinsically motivated and well-organized individual with excellent skills in problem solving, hypothesis development and testing, writing and scientific communication, experienced in standard molecular and genetic techniques using a model organism (mouse, zebrafish, fly, or yeast). Those with limited animal model skills, but solid foundations in biochemistry with cell culture experience are also encouraged to apply. Bioinformatics knowledge is particularly useful, but not a prerequisite.

You will be working in a high energy and cooperative atmosphere to ensure a fluid working environment, oversee and direct specific research projects and manage individuals where needed. Your efforts will be critical to achieve the group’s goal of understanding the genetic and molecular events that give rise to a functional cardiovascular system.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

-Basic understanding of mouse and zebrafish genetics (cre/lox technology, CRISPR/Cas9, transgenes, etc).

-Proficiency in cellular and molecular techniques including recombinant DNA, cell culture and immunohistochemistry.

-Data collection, compilation, analysis and presentation.

-Proficiency with productivity software including Microsoft Office and Adobe products (Illustrator, Photoshop), databases (Filemaker), and other management/organization software. Sourcing, summarizing and contextualizing information and literature for studies, papers, and grants. -Prepares written material as needed for laboratory communications.

Minimum Qualifications:

-MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Physiology, Cancer Biology, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Sciences, Genetics, Bioinformatics or a related field.

-Experience working with animal models (mouse or zebrafish)

-Experience in imaging (micro-CT, LSFM, confocal)

We’ll reward your passion, skills and hard work with the opportunity to present your data at national and/or international meetings, as well as local seminars within the Texas Medical Center. Meetings are great opportunities for professional networking and we will provide those options on an annual basis (or more, depending on your securement of additional funding-i.e. training grants). Trainees will be expected to create figures, craft talks and manuscripts, and submit training grant proposals for internal and external funding. We will dedicate time for formal coursework to enhance your knowledge base, and we’ll commit to rigorous mentoring/training on scientific presentation and writing skills, and will rabidly encourage any career path (academic, industry, education) that appeals to you.
