Postdoctoral Positions in Marine Neurogenomics and Climate Change

Postdoctoral research positions are available in the Lyons and Hamdoun labs located at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego to develop transgenic and functional genomics tools to study the nervous system of marine invertebrates. The successful candidates would carry out work as a member of the newly formed Allen Discovery Center for Neurobiology in Changing Environments (ADC-NiCE). This pioneering, transdisciplinary center investigates the impacts of climate change on the neurobiology of marine organisms, and how marine animals’ nervous systems are affected by climate change-related stressors. The postdoc will have the opportunity to work with one or possibly both of the labs, applying their expertise to unravel the complexities of marine neurobiology. Research Focus in the Lyons Lab

We study developmental biology with a focus on uncovering the cellular and molecular mechanisms that build diverse animal body plans, and the factors that allow those mechanisms to evolve. We use primarily molluscs and echinoderms as model research organisms. For this project we seek a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in molecular biology and functional genomics to join our interdisciplinary team.

Research Focus in the Hamdoun Lab

We study ecological developmental biology and environmental toxicology with a focus on mechanisms of cellular defense against xenobiotics. The Hamdoun lab is also focused on the development of new resources for sea urchin biology, and the development of new, genetically-enabled, urchin model species. The candidate will be part of a motivated and focused team that is working to have a lasting impact on the field.

Qualifications:
-Ph.D. in molecular biology, genomics, cell biology, developmental biology, neuroscience, or a related field
-No more than 2 years of previous postdoctoral research (i.e. within two years of doctoral degree conferment)
-Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications, especially first-author manuscripts and/or pre-prints
-Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team, and demonstrated record or aptitude for resource development and sharing

Additionally candidates should have:
-A strong record of problem solving and innovation
-Experience with emerging transgenic approaches (minos, tol2), and/or CRISPR CAS mediated knock-in
-Experience in bioinformatics and/or computational biology
-Experience with functional genomics approaches (e.g. scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, polysome-seq)
-Aptitude and willingness to work with (and care for) living biological organisms
