PhD position in epithelial tissue dynamics, Luschnig Lab, University of Münster (Germany)

Posted by , on 20 August 2026

Job type:

Location: Münster

Closing Date: 1 October 2026

Stefan Luschnig’s research group at the Institute of Integrative Cell Biology and Physiology at the University of Münster, Germany, invites applications for a

Doctoral Research Associate (PhD student)

(salary level 13 TV-L, 65%) in the area of

Epithelial Tissue Dynamics

This fixed-term position is available from the earliest possible date for the duration of three years.

Your tasks:

The position is tied to working towards a doctorate (Ph.D.) in developmental cell biology and genetics. The successful candidate will investigate how junctional dynamics, cytoskeletal organization, and signalling regulate epithelial morphogenesis and transepithelial transport during oogenesis in Drosophila (Jacobs et al. (2025) Current Biology 35: 1181–96). The project combines molecular and cell biology, Drosophila genetics, and state-of-the-art imaging approaches with quantitative image analysis and modelling, offering broad training in modern developmental and cell biology. Teaching responsibilities include the supervision of undergraduate students at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.

Our expectations:

The prerequisite for this appointment is a M.Sc. degree in biology, biochemistry or another related discipline. Candidates with a strong background in cell or developmental biology, molecular biology or genetics are encouraged to apply. Applications from candidates interested in quantitative imaging are especially welcome. A good command of written and spoken English is essential. German language skills would be advantageous but are not a requirement.

Advantages for you:

The Luschnig group investigates cellular, molecular and developmental aspects of epithelial biology using a broad range of techniques including modern imaging approaches. The laboratory is based at the Multiscale Imaging Centre (MIC), which provides an outstanding interdisciplinary research environment with state-of-the-art microscopy infrastructure (CLSM, spinning disk, SIM, light-sheet, electron microscopy). The Institute of Integrative Cell Biology and Physiology and MIC offer an international atmosphere and diverse opportunities for dynamic scientific exchange.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Integrated Research Training Group of the Collaborative Research Centre 1348 “Dynamic Cellular Interfaces”, which offers a tailored training programme with subject-based interdisciplinary research, soft skills courses and support for career development.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.

Applications should include a motivation letter and a curriculum vitae. We look forward to receiving your application by 1 October 2026. Applications should be sent electronically, as one single PDF file, to:
