Group leader positions

The Michael Sars Centre is seeking outstanding candidates addressing fundamental questions in molecular, cellular and organismal biology using marine/aquatic organisms. Research projects at the Centre typically cover a broad range of academic disciplines including cellular and molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cells and regeneration, neurobiology, physiology and reproductive biology, genomics and evolution. Research projects leveraging quantitative, genomics and/or systems approaches to tackle innovative and impactful problems in marine life sciences, from molecular to population scales and/or at the interface between the organism and the environment are encouraged.

The Centre currently has 6 research groups, each with its own group leader, and a total of approximately 12 researchers, 11 postdoctoral fellows, 9 PhD fellows, 20 technical and 6 administrative employees. The Centre provides excellent internal resources for the research (postdocs, PhD students, technicians, lab space and project-specific facilities). Operations at the Centre are supported by the University of Bergen and by a growing portfolio of externally funded projects.

Successful candidates for the position will be offered a contract as research scientist with function as group leader, subject to evaluation within the first 6-year period for an additional 4 years, according to the EMBL-model. An additional 4 years is dependent on performance and available funding at the time of evaluation.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a PhD considered equivalent to the Norwegian PhD degree.
  • Ability to train and lead junior scientists and technical staff towards a common goal defined in the group leader proposal is a requirement.
  • Ability to develop collaborations with other research groups located in and out of the institution is a requirement.
  • Ability to contribute actively to the academic life of the Centre and the University is a requirement.
  • Group leaders at the Centre are expected and supported to apply to national and international funding agencies for external grants.
  • A good fit to the Centre’s research portfolio and scientific direction are advantages.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

In assessing the candidates, a review of both the quality and the breadth of the candidate’s research will be conducted. Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.

Special requirements for the position:

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

We can offer:

  • Attractive start-up packages for new group leaders.
  • A nurturing, inspiring and exciting work environment, with cutting edge research facilities.
  • Position as researcher (code 1110 in the basic collective agreement) with a starting gross annual salary of NOK 845.900 (equivalent to pay grade 79) upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service and performance in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
  • Good welfare benefits

Your application in English must include:

  • A cover letter (maximum 1 page)
  • A detailed CV and statement of past achievements (maximum 4 pages)
